THE DONEGAL JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE will have a delegates meeting this week with a view of running intermediate football in the county in 2017.
The Ulster Senior League currently has six clubs – Bonagee United, Cockhill Celtic, Derry City reserves, Fanad United, Letterkenny Rovers and Swilly Rovers – and tonight at the league’s AGM, USL secretary Niall Callaghan outlined some of the steps the executive have been making to add to the numbers.

“We, as an executive, have worked tirelessly to get teams into our league,” Callaghan said in his secretary’s report. “We have spoke to both the Inishowen and Donegal leagues, with only the latter willing to work with us.
“The Donegal League have been approached with a view to running intermediate football from the start of the 2017 season. They are due to meet their delegates this week where this will be brought up for discussion. We have also had meetings with Finn Harps but we’ll have to see how that pans out.
Callaghan also said that there have been a move to restructure the Knockalla Caravans Cup, the competition that is made of of teams from the Ulster Senior League, Donegal League and Inishowen League.
“We have made representations to the Ulster FA with a view to revamping the Knockalla Caravans Cup. We have asked they invite Intermediate teams from Derry and Tyrone to take part and to stretch the competition out to over an entire season.”
Callaghan added afterwards: “Since I wrote that report I’ve spoken to the Ulster FA and they’ve agreed in principle to do it.”
