JOE DUFFY is confident that he can reach the top echelons of the UFC’s lightweight division after a stunning demolition of Mitch Clarke on Thursday night in Las Vegas.
Duffy put Clarke to the mat and locked in a rear naked choke that helped him to the fourth fastest submission in UFC history.
“It was a vital experience,” Duffy told Donegal Sport Hub this evening.
[adrotate group=”37″]“I’m 100 per cent confident that I can mix it with the best in the world. I want to get to the top. That’s where I want to be.
“I’m always very confident in my game.”
The win was Duffy’s tenth submission win and extends his record to 15-2 as a mixed martial artist.
Clarke had never been beaten by submission previously, but the Canadian was rocked by deadly Duffy.
[adrotate group=”55″]The Donegal man said: “I couldn’t have asked for it to have gone any better. You never plan for it to be over that quick, but thank God it went good.
“I saw the fight being a tough three rounds. No-one ever seemed to put him away and I was preparing for three rounds.
“The win is a priority, but to do it in spectacular fashion is always a bonus.
“Things went my way, but getting back on track was the main thing. The win is a priority, but to do it in spectacular fashion is always a bonus.”
On his loss to Poirier, after much hype, back in January, Duffy said: “I just feel sharp. I didn’t feel like I could move at the right speed and I felt lethargic. I was eager to get back and make things right.”
[adrotate group=”38″]Duffy is now based in Montreal, where he trains under Firas Zahabi and has also worked with John Danaher in New York.
Duffy – who hopes to have his next fight in New York or even back in Ireland – spent some time in Donegal in between these bouts, something that rekindled a spark.
He said: “When you’re away from home, you forget how much it means to people and how much support you have. You don’t want to let them down. That makes such a difference.”
