A LEON THOMPSON goal helped Naomh Conaill retain the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta crown against An Ghaeltacht from Kerry.
Naomh Conaill 1-16 An Ghaeltacht 2-10
The side managed by Martin Regan and Martin Doherty were 0-8 to 0-4 up at half-time in Ballyvourney, Co Cork, before Thompson smashed home a 40th minute goal having been set up by John O’Malley.
The win meant back to back titles for the Glenties-based side following their victory over Kilcar in last October’s rescheduled final in Ardara.
Eunan Doherty also had a fine second half, scoring three times and winning the TG4 man of the match award.
An Ghaeltacht scored a 36th minute goal through Sean M Ó Conchuir to get back into the tie, 1-5 to 0-10 down.
O’Malley, with his side 1-14 to 1-8 in front on 53 minutes, had a chance to score his team’s second goal only to see goalkeeper Tomás Sayers make a fine point black save.
Eoin MacGearailt bundled home a goal for An Ghaeltacht with seven minutes to go and as time wore thin there was only a point between the teams.
Captain Brendan McDyer was dismissed in the last minute for picking up a second yellow card but Gallagher and O’Malley’s injury time point was enough for Naomh Conaill.
