Wednesday 25th Open, kindly sponsored by our new sponsor to the club, The Kitchen, Letterkenny, recorded a large entry no doubt due to the summer season which we are having.
Taking the top prize as well as the sunburn was Ciaran Haran [12] who, having had a ‘blank’ at Glebe [2nd], replied with birdies at 5th [Inishowen and 7th [The Isle] for an outward nine of 23pts and, despite a double bogey at Candalabra [15th], a finishing birdie at 18th had him return a winning 43pts.

Just one point adrift in second place was Shane Scanlan [8] who, despite starting with a ‘blank’ at Hall Door [1st] proceeded to record a level par score from 2nd thru 18th, consisting of bogey at Crievesmith [9th] and birdie at Stockade [par five18th]for a one under par back nine and 42pts. overall.
In third place was the ever present Kevin Hensey [13] whose front nine scoring had left him far afield at the turn, with a bouble bogey at 2nd, birdie at par five 7th, back-to-back ‘blanks’ at 8th and 9th, only to record a birdie at the Stack Yard [14th] and an eagle three at the par five 18th where he played a driver and nine iron to the hole to finish on 41pts. Gross prize was won by Kevin Hannigan [6] with 33 gross points.

Sunday 29th Open, gratefully sponsored by annual sponsor C & M Embroidery [Cathal Sheridan], was won by new season member and cat 4 prodigy Richard Spratt [28] with 41pts. Playing steady, handicap golf, Richard’s pars gave him those extra points needed to keep juvenile prospect Lee Walsh [14] in runner-up spot.
Despite a triple bogey at Hall Door [1st], Lee’s tenacity on the course helped him to a front nine of 20pts and with 19pts recorded on back nine, returned 39pts to relegate veteran member Tommy Daly [19] to third on B.O.T. With Tommy scoring 23pts on front nine with the help of a birdie at The Isle [7th], a win looked a possibility but no doubt that ‘blank’ at Aughaninshin [17th] had him lose out on top spot.
Monday 30th Cat 4 members are growing like the summer flowers with over twenty turning out on Monday night to see Richard Spratt completing the double with his second win with 28pts and B.O.T. over Garvin Mc Cahey, also 28pts, over 13 holes.
Recent winners on presentation night at Letterkenny Golf Club were, l-r; Pluincead O’ Ferraigh, Gerry O’ Sullivan, Ivan Fuery [captain]Bryan Harkin, Kevin Kiely, Peter Dobson and Dermot Rainey.
