ONE GOAL WAS enough for Glenea United to win the Voodoo Venue Saturday Cup against Glencar Celtic at Ballyare yesterday.
Glenea United 1-0 Glencar Celtic
In the 69th minute, a long kick-out from Glenea goalkeeper Ciaran Gallagher wasn’t dealt with by the Glencar defence and Aodhan Ferry flicked the ball past substitute goalkeeper Ray McFeely.
For Glencar, it was double disappointment, having lost the final of the Saturday League Cup two weeks’ beforehand against Drumkeen United.
In very difficult underfoot conditions, the first half was well contested without any real clear-cut chances. Mark Graham of Glencar shot just wide and Garvan Grieve had a free-kick that was well struck and was dipping in but Gallagher in the Glenea goal tipped over.
At the other end, Eugene Maguire blasted over after the Glencar netminder, Dominic Friel, had punched away a free from Padraig McGee.
Friel was injured in the incident and was replaced in goal by McFeely.

In the second half, Eddie McLaughlin of Glencar set Graham away but McGee made a fine covering tackle. Then Glenea’s Aodhan Ferry got in at the other end but couldn’t keep his shot down.
Glencar had a considerable let-off in the 54th minute when Charles McLaughlin sliced a devious cross by Lee O’Brien over his own crossbar. It could’ve gone anywhere.
After the goal, there was an urgency about Glencar’s play. Anthony Doherty crossed in the 71st minute and Rory Gallagher’s shot was inches wide of the post. Graham was similarly out of luck when he was narrowly wide.
[adrotate group=”62″]Substitute Michael McHugh had a great chance to make it 2-0 on 76 minutes when he was played into space by Aodhan Ferry. McFeely came from his line and made a vital stop.
Michael Molloy, with just nine minutes left, was unfortunate not to score from a header after Grieve’s free-kick.
And in the last minute of the 90, a long ball into the Glenea box broke to Mark Forde. The centre-half, though, blasted over from 10 yards and with that Glenea had won.
