Magee siblings bow out of European Championships

SAM AND CHLOE MAGEE missed out on a medal at the European Badminton Championships in France this afternoon.

In a mixed doubles quarter-final, the Raphoe brother-sister duo lost out to Niclas Nohr and Sara Thygesen from Denmark 22-20, 21-12.

It has been a good week for the Magees at the Championships, held in La Roche-sur-Yon.

Their mixed doubles bid began with a massive coup when they overcame former European Champions and fourth seeds Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba from Poland. The Magees took a 21-18, 13-21, 21-18 win in a pulsating contest.

They followed that up with a 21-19, 14-21, 24-22 win over Germans Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich.

But their challenge fell today against Nohr and Thygesen.

In the women’s singles, Chloe Magee’s advancement to the last sixteen appears to have qualified her for the 2016 Olympic Games with the release of the BWF World Rankings next week set to confirm her spot in Rio.
