BRETT MCGINTY SCORED a useful win last night in America ahead of his pursuit of a seventh Irish title next weekend.
The St Johnston man overcame Deonte Washington on a unanimous decision.
McGinty defeated the 19-year-old American in Washinton DC. The Oakleaf ABC puncher was up against a man almost three years his senior, but McGinty gave another reminder of his talents.
McGinty held sway in the opening round and, the more the bout advanced, the stronger McGinty became.
The 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games silver medalist and six-time Irish champion landed a series of telling blows to body and head on his way to another triumph.
“It was a good fight for me,” McGinty told Donegal Sport Hub from Washington DC.
“I felt comfortable for most of the fight. A lot of the time he was tying me up. He’s fairly experienced and it’s the fifth time he’s boxed in this show. It was good to get the fight and the win. It’ll stand to me.”
The National Under-18 Championships begin next week in Dublin and McGinty goes there looking to add another string to his bow.
