JOHNNY DUNLEAVY RATES his chances of playing against Finn Harps on Friday night as ’50-50’.
The Ballybofey native is now in his fifth season with the Leesiders, having returned from a spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 24-year-old was a boyhood Harps fan, but the Cork captain admits that he is considered a major doubt for Friday’s game at Turner’s cross.
Dunleavy’s path crossed with Harps’ only once previously – for a 2014 pre-season friendly, a 3-3 draw in Galway – and he might have to wait after suffering a concussion last Friday.
During Cork’s 2-2 draw with Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park, Dunleavy had to come off early in the second half.
“I took a bang in a tackle and was knocked out for about 20 seconds,” he said.
“I went to hospital straight away and got it checked out. I got the all-clear, thank God, but I still need some more tests before I can get the go-ahead to play on Friday night.
“It’s 50-50 at this stage and I couldn’t honestly say I’m any better than that. I’ll see the doctor tomorrow, have a talk with him and see where I’m at.
After a 1-0 win over defending champions Dundalk, Cork have now drawn their last three League games and are seven points off the pace.
“We started the season well and we’re playing well at the moment, but lately we’ve not got the points that we should have,” Dunleavy said.
“We’ll look to turn those draws into wins. We’ve not played badly in any of those games. A few chances just haven’t fallen for us.
“Hopefully we can get back to winning ways this week again.
“I’m looking forward to it. I’ve never played against Harps competitively before.
“It was the first game that I looked for when the fixture list game out. I was the only man in the Cork squad who wanted two games in Ballybofey!
“For me, it’ll be business as usual on Friday – that’s just the way it’ll have to be.”
