DAY TWO of the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup produced no end of drama, excitement or goals yesterday.
It was a particularly fine day at the office for the Inishowen League representatives.
The Inishowen Under-12s overcame Maiden City 2-0 with Oisin Porter and Adam Duffy scoring for Diarmuid O’Brien’s team at Greencastle.
Dean Harkin netted a brace and Darragh Gillen was also on the mark as the Inishowen Under-13s defeated Magherafelt 3-0.
Luke Rudden bagged a hat-trick in a 4-0 win for the Inishowen Under-14s over Carniny with the other goal by Nathan Logue-Cunningham.
Inishowen’s Under-15s dispatched Carniny 4-1, Lee McLaughlin’s brace and goals from Jack Doherty and Josh Lynch sealing a win there, while the Inishowen Under-16s drew 2-2 with Sion at Templemore.
The Inishowen teams had joy in the Ladies Foyle Cup.
At St Columb’s Park, Illies defeated Lagan Harps 3-0. Paula McGrory scored two and Michelle McDaid the other.
Up in Chapel Lane, Greencastle were 3-1 winners over Bonagee United. Shannon McDonald put Greencastle ahead, only for Shannon McBride to level things. In a game that could have gone either way, Eimear Lafferty’s penalty and Nicole Gordon’s goal secured a 3-1 win.
The Donegal Schoolboys League had a good day out, too, with wins at Under-12, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-16 level.
Kevin McHugh’s Donegal Schoolboys Under-14s were up against the might of Celtic and only lost 1-0 to the Glasgow outfit at Brooke Park.
The Under-12s were 3-0 winners over Foyle Harps to make it two wins from two with Peter McHugh’s team now facing a crunch final group game today against Cookstown, who also have maximum points.
Ryan Coyle, with two, and Joshua Bradley hit the goals as Gerry Crossan’s Donegal Schoolboys Under-13 (pictured above), this year’s inter-league finalists, overcame Foyle Harps 3-1 and they, too, are top of their group.
The Under-15s, under the watch of Steve Coll, had a big 6-1 win over Ballycastle with six different scorers: Joel Bradley-Walsh, Odhrán McGuinness, Conor O’Reilly, Darragh Ellison, Jamie Doherty and Stephen McFadden.
Pat Ward’s Under-16s also won well, defeating Ballymoney 5-0. Ryan Toye scored twice and there was a goal apiece for Mikey Sweeney, Conor McHugh and Michael Cutliffe.
Kildrum Tigers are the only Donegal team in the Under-19 Foyle Cup, but Shane McGinty’s team lost 2-1 at Institute. Jamie McKinney pulled the Tigers level after falling behind, but ‘Stute hit back instantly for the winner.
Derry City, led by a strong Donegal connection, continued their excellent start to the Under-19 competition with Ben Doherty (2), Dean Brown and an own goal firing them to a 4-0 win over Oldpark Reds in Wilton Park.
In Newbuildings, Donegal men Shane McNamee, Aaron McColgan, Connor Gormley, Sean McBride and Conor O’Donnell all scored as Derry City’s flying start to the Under-17 Foyle Cup was maintained.
Derry hit Newbuildings for a 5-0 defeat and the Candystripes take on Donegal Celtic this evening in Templemore.
While Letterkenny Rovers lost 2-0 against Trojans at the Brandywell Showgrounds, Sean Gallagher’s Drumkeen recovered from a heavy opening night loss by defeating Institute 2-1, thanks to goals by Conor Patton and Ben Sweeney.
Drumkeen take on Loughside this evening in St Patrick’s Park with Letterkenny up against Carniny at Lisnagelvin.
Letterkenny/North-West Under-12s went down 2-1 against Glenavon while South Donegal lost out 2-1 against Sion.
However, East Donegal Under-12s battled from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw with Ballymoney. Mark Mbuli and Jacob McDaid scored the goals and East Donegal could have won it, but Callum Gillen narrowly missed out on a connection to a cross late in the day.
Finn Harps’ Under-13s worked hard for a scoreless draw with Warrenpoint.
Harps’ Under-14s overcame Institute 4-0 with Sean Doherty, Brian McDaid, Owen Logue and Caolan Collier scoring the goals and strikes by Oisin Gallen and Ronan McHugh secured a 2-1 win for the Harps Under-16s over Maiden City.
However, Harps’ Under-15s went down 2-0 against Don Boscos.
Letterkenny Rovers Under-14s secured a superb 0-0 draw against FD Suomi in St Johnston.
Castlefin Celtic are in Foyle Cup action for the first time, but there was agony late in the game yesterday in their Under-14 clash with Glenavon when two goals in the final moments secured a 2-0 win for Glenavon.
Corey Lindsay scored twice for Lifford Celtic’s Under-14s, but they were beaten 5-2 by Crusaders.
