Sandra Streete, Chairman of the Autism Family Support Group said: “We are so thankful to Letterkenny Rugby Club and everyone who took part and supported us last Saturday, It was a huge success. We as a group who support children diagnosed with Autism and their families.
“We set this group up 10 years ago when a small group of parents came together to provide support, encouragement and information for those whose lives are affected by ASD by sharing information and experiences. We all work on a voluntary basis and we now have over 150 members.

“When your child is diagnosed with Autism parents can feel quite isolated. Our group aims to offer an understanding environment and support both through social media and through monthly meetings where parents get together and discuss their difficulties and successes. We also have information evenings where parents can get information on a range of topics eg sleep issues, toilet training, etc. We provide opportunities where our children can take part in a number of different activities in an autism friendly non judgemental environment. eg Drama classes.
“We also provide days out where each child is accepted for themselves. Some parents feel unable to take their children out in public due to people judging their parenting skills etc. so when we all go out as a group they feel more confident. We also try to raise autism awareness within our community.
“Local businesses have been great, making small differences that make their facilities more autism friendly. We are delighted to know now that for the month of April that more people know we exist. We can be contacted on 086 1058086, if there are any parents out there who feel they need support.”
Speaking on behalf of Letterkenny Rugby Club Michael McGarvey commented: “Our club were delighted with how the event went on Saturday, our association with the Autism Family Support Group has provided awareness to our club and we encourage our members to interact with this voluntary group. I would like to thank everyone who supported us in any way and we are committed to continue to raise awareness for Autism within our club”.
