WHILE RORY GALLAGHER freely admits that the Allianz League isn’t something he’d lose sleep over, the Donegal manager wouldn’t mind a place in its Division 1 final.
Gallagher’s Donegal have been a mixed bunch this season on the face of it, with three wins followed by four losses but that was still enough to have sealed a place in the semi-final of the competition tomorrow against Dublin.
Even in Donegal’s run of defeats, there were positives that could be built upon.
“Kerry and Monaghan in particular we got into really good positions,” Gallagher said. “Even against Roscommon after a horrific start we got back to just two down but then lost a man. But we have to look at ourselves and the reason we lost them. We lost men, gave away frees and let’s be honest, ran out of steam.”
Dublin beat Donegal 1-13 to 0-7 at Croke Park last month and won all seven of their outings so far this spring. That’s the mountain Donegal will have to climb to seal a place in the final against the winners of Kerry and Roscommon.
“A league final would be brilliant preparation,” Gallagher added.”We’ve a big challenge in Dublin who are unbeaten this year. League football isn’t the be-all and end-all. Dublin are ultra-competitive all the time.
“Last time against Dublin, we had hit the front and will be disappointed we didn’t push on. We didn’t do a whole lot wrong defensively but we’d have liked to have scored more. That’s important against Dublin too.”
