CHRISTY TOYE SAYS despite Donegal sealing their Division 1 status for 2017, there’s no intention to face Dublin in Sunday’s semi-final to merely make up the numbers.
Toye, who is Donegal’s longest-serving player having made his championship debut in 2002, was at St Eunan’s College today in his role as an athlete mentor with the Sky Sports Living for Sport initiative with Sky Sports Scholar Mark English (pictured above).
It had been suggested that Donegal have achieved their aim for the Allianz League but Toye insists there’s a game to be won against Dublin.
“That’s the way it is with some pundits,” he said. “Donegal have a reputation of their eyes in playing a game a certain way that doesn’t suit the purists of the game. At the same time if you’re going to win the game you have to do it whatever way you see possible.
“Nobody wants to go to Dublin and to Croke Park to get beat. At the start of the league the aim was to get to the semi-finals. It’s nine weeks to the championship and it’s quite a long time. Getting to the final would be a bonus. We’re going up there to win the match. We’re not looking past Sunday.
“We’re just going to have to focus on those later periods in the game. You have to be smart and pick your battles. You’re always going to be tapering towards the championship.”
