THE CLIMAX OF the Letterkenny and District Gaelic football league recently took place in Glenswilly with the Elaine Winston Friel and Susan Carr Cups to be played for.
There was a small school and large school boys/girls sections up for grabs. The four large school semi-finalists in the boys sections included Illistrin N.S, Scoil Cholmcille, Lurgybrack N.S and Kilmacrenan N.S.

The girls section included Illistrin N.S, Woodlands N.S, Termon N.S and the Gaelscoil. The smaller school section was made up of Stramore N.S, Educate Together, Drumoghill N.S and Magherabeg N.S. The standard of football was very high within all sections with the eventual winners been Lurgybrack N.S (Boys), Gaelscoil Adhnaman (Girls) and Stramore N.S (Smaller schools section).
Participation and sportsmanship throughout the entire competition was excellent with the basic skills of Gaelic football showing significant improvement. Overall the league which ran over a number of months was highly successful with the local clubs of St Eunan’s, Glenswilly, Termon and Letterkenny Gaels all showing support.
A special thanks must be given to the clubs of Glenswilly and St Eunans for providing venues for the games throughout the league. As already mentioned participation was very important and thanks must go to Brian McCormick for providing medals for all 300 plus footballers.
The future of the league is bright considering the hard work the local District committee in particular Jim Clarke and Ciaran Gallagher and the support of the schools and local clubs. The league is also fortunate to have Rory Kavanagh (Committee chairperson) and Frank McGlynn.
