JAMES KELLY broke his brother’s Irish record on his way to winning gold in the Under-17 shot putt at the AAI Juvenile Indoor Championships today.
The Finn Valley AC man threw the shot to 16.09 metres for a new Irish record, beating the previous mark of 15.90 that was set by his brother, John.
The St Johnston man, a student at the Royal and Prior in Raphoe, win gold from Dunboyne’s Jack Nyham and Tagmon AC’s Padraig Hore.
The Kelly brothers are coached by their father, John, with James’ now taking another of his sibling’s records, taking the Irish age group record.
James was awarded by Athletics Ireland earlier this year as best young thrower nationally after a record breaking season.
In 2015, he set a new Celtic Games record to take gold in the Under-16 shot-putt event in Falkirk, where he threw 17.68 metres, breaking the Celtic Games record set by John (17.56 metres) in 2011.
