Donegal schools were again to the fore in the finals of the National Finals of the large schools Sports Hall Athletics Programme held in the impressive National Indoor Arena at Athlone Institute of Technology.
The programme, coordinated by Donegal Sports Partnership and Donegal Athletics Board, commenced in Donegal in October last year with 31 primary schools participating in County Regional events followed by a County final in the Aura Sports Centre, Letterkenny in February.
This resulted in three schools qualifying to represent Donegal in Athlone across four categories in the national finals. Sports Hall Athletics is a team format across 12 different athletic disciplines from running to throwing and jumping.
When the final points tallies were done after the national finals in Athlone Donegal schools after some very high class competition came out on top.
In the 3rd/4th class girls Donegal represented by Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, Letterkenny with 298 points were deemed winners ahead of Meath and Clare.
In the 3rd /4th class boys Donegal represented by Scoil Colmcille, Letterkenny with 238 points were in second place behind the eventual winners Clare with 252 points with Leitrim in 3rd.
In the 5th/6th class girls Donegal represented by Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana with 300 points were winners just 1 point ahead of Clare in second place and Meath in 3rd in a nail biting finish.
In the 5th/6th class boys Scoil Colmcille, Letterkenny were winners with winners with 268 points ahead of Clare in second place and Meath in 3rd.
Overall these results reflect the great work being delivered in Primary Schools in athletics by teacher/coaches supported by the many athletics clubs coaches across the county who volunteer to help teachers in delivering the programme.
All winning schools will be presented with their winning trophies at events to be arranged after the Easter break.
