The departure of rain on Saturday last did little to repel the icy cold conditions which greeted the hardy golfers of Barnhill.
But one man who overcame the northernly wind was cat 4 member Columba Crawford [28] a new addition to the weekend winners’ circle. Having learned the basic rule of ‘playing to your handicap’, Columba’s course management with shots allowed had him record a winning total of 35pts, one point ahead of runner-up Kenny King [8] on 34pts.
Kenny, showing good form of late, eradicated his birdie at Inishowen [5th] with an unusual ‘blank’ at the following par three, Greenhill [8th] and his second birdie at par three 16th, Barnhill, just wasn’t enough to recover.
Letterkenny Golf Club President Greg Sullivan, Lady Captain Jacqueline Ireland and club Captain Ivan Fuery who will have the ‘teeing’ off honours on Saturday at Barnhill.
Sunday 6th confined competition had us witness a great return to form from the master of the short irons, Liam mac Suibhne [13]. Following a nonchalant start of bogey-bogey, Liam Sweeney clicked into gear and recorded a one under par score of 27pts from three thru eleven when he made birdie four at Settlement only to return it to the course with bogeys at 12th and 17th for a superb 44pt return.
Running a tight second was, arguably, Finn Harps no. 1 supporter, Sam Hegarty [22] with 43pts. No doubt these two members will be highly sought after this season by the respective club team captains.
Congratulations to club member and Jimmy Bruen panelist Clive Davison on winning the Golfer of the Year nett section in the North Western Winter Alliance.
