MARTIN LYNCH WAS the first local finisher at the Race 2016 – Ireland’s first 24-hour endurance event, which took place in Donegal for the third time over the weekend.
A barber at Gerry’s Barber Shop in Letterkenny,  the Ramelton native came home in an excellent time of 15:41:01.

Stage 1 was a 22km jog from Gartan to Ramelton before Stage 2 – a 15km kayak onto Rathmullan. Stage 3 then was the first of two cycles, some 96km from Rathmullan over Knockalla to the Atlantic Drive, over Lough Salt and into the base of Muckish.
Stage 4 consisted of a 5km scramble up and down Muckish before Stage 5 meant it was time to get back on the bike for 68km from Muckish around the Bloody Foreland and back to Doochary. Then, to finish, a full marathon back to Gartan via Glenveagh National Park for Stage 6.

“Your head is everywhere and sometimes you get a flat spot but you just have to get through it,” he said. “I am delighted with third place. I had the work done and did a lot of training for it. I’ve had a lot of long, long days out on the bike – in wet days and on windy days.”
