BRENDAN O’DONNELL reached the European Youth Qualifying standard this afternoon in Dunboyne.
The 16-year-old Lifford Strabane AC hammer-thrower was in action for the first time in 2016 today at a throws meet at the County Meath venue.
A finalist at the European Youth Olympics in 2015, St Eunan’s College student O’Donnell – who finished seventh in Tblisi – will now be back in international action.
With his sixth throw of the competition, O’Donnell launched the hammer out to 64.72 metres, surpassing the 63.50m European standard by well over a metre.
O’Donnell’s attempt has fired him into the top ten in Europe.
Over the winter months, O’Donnell has been working under the watchful eye of his coach and father, John, and will be aiming to target another European final.
The European Youth Champioships take place in Tblisi, Georgia, where O’Donnell competed last year.
