DAVE SCULLY’S WIFE, AMANDA, might still need convincing that it was a good idea for her husband to agree to sign for Finn Harps.
However, Scully’s goal on Friday night in the 2-1 win over Derry City has helped convince the Harps supporters at least.
Scully (31) is a player of vast experience having had spells at Kildare County, Monaghan United, Bohemians and Bray Wanderers.
In first-half stoppage time on Friday night, Scully rose to head home from Adam Hanlon’s free kick and send Harps on their way to their first League win over Derry since 1998.
“It’s a long journey down here, but I’m going to dedicate myself to the club for the year,” Scully said.
“It’s a change, being out of Dublin. My wife isn’t too happy, but I told her I’d get a goal tonight and I did!”
Scully had offers from Bray, Athlone Town and Drogheda United, but plumped for Harps as Horgan has allowed him train in Donegal once a week, which suits the L&M Keating work safety rep.
“It was great to get the goal,” Scully said, with Ryan Curran, another new signing putting Harps 2-0 up before Rory Patterson bagged a late goal for Derry.
“Derry were the better team, but we dug in and we got the win.
“That’s three points in the bag. We are going to be fighting relegation. This is just the first game.
“Of course with it being the derby game, everyone is going to be up for it, but we’re going to Dundalk next week and we know how difficult that’ll be.”
Scully has experienced Dublin derbies before, but was taken by the red hot Ballybofey atmosphere on Friday night with close-on 5,000 cramming in to the ground.
Scully said: “It was amazing. Kevin McHugh was telling me all about the history beforehand, about how they hadn’t beaten Derry in the League in 18 years.
“I’m probbaly one of the more experienced lads here now. There are a lot of young players at Finn Harps. It’s probably good for them to have the likes of, say, myself, Kevin McHugh and Barry Molloy.”
