IT’S 12 YEARS SINCE Letterkenny Rovers last reached the semi-finals of the Intermediate Cup, but manager Eamon McConigley has a confident air ahead of Sunday’s quarter-final against Killester United.
In 2004, Rovers lost a semi-final replay to Rockmount of Cork and haven’t got back to that stage since.
On Sunday, Leinster Senior League side Killester stand in their way in a quarter-final at Leckview Park.
“Since this competiton started, we set our minds on it,” said McConigley, a two-time Intermediate Cup winner from his time at Fanad United.
“We have beaten very good intermediate sides so far. We have no reason to be afraid of any team. We won’t be overawed at all. We’re a good side and we’re at home so we want to hammer home that advantage.
“We have to stay focussed as long as we can. In the Intermediate Cup, metal attitude is the key for a lot of the games.”
The hamstrung Paul McVeigh is a doubt for Sunday’s game. McVeigh scored in the last round, a 2-1 win over Midleton of Cork, but is in a race against time.
McVeigh missed Sunday’s madcap 4-4 draw at Swilly Rovers, which came a week after Rovers were handed their coats in the cloakroom of the Knockalla Caravans Cup by Donegal League side Drumoghill FC.
However, McConigley said:“I’m not worried in any way about the last two results going into this game.”
