THE DONEGAL BASKETBALL CLUB UNDER-14 girls basketball team won the North West League Title with a win over Ballyshannon 88ers 49-27 to go through the league undefeated.
This is the club’s first underage title for a number of years and all at the club are very proud of the effort the girls have put it.
The squad will now prepare for the AICC – the All Ireland Club Competition – on April 9 and 10 and will play the Super cup Final on March 13.
The club will be fundraising for this group to travel to the AICC and kit them out properly on this trip so any sponsors willing to help out please let anyone at the club know.
A fantastic opening quarter with Captain Amy Lorinyenko and Sophie Carr hitting 18 points between them gave our girls the cushion to go on and take the win.
But Ballyshannon to their credit played well and despite the opening quarter gave as good as the got for the rest of the game and with a very young team the future looks really bright for them. But our girls won the next quarter 10-8 with two of the teams big improvers Orla Carbury and Lucy Mc Gowan doing the damage for the home team.
With the gym packed with support for both these sides it shows the interest in basketball in the area is on the rise. Donegal edged the next 9-4 with the fantastic Sophie Carr getting all our points and a 12-9 last quarter saw our girls home to win the Regional Title. MVP was Sophie Carr closely followed by Orla Carbury.
