OLLIE HORGAN SAID he “wouldn’t read too much” into Finn Harps pre-season win against Athlone Town yesterday.
Athlone Town 2-4 Finn Harps
The Harps manager saw his team run in a 4-2 victory on the 3G pitch at Gainstown – Mullingar Athletic FC – after the Athlone Town Stadium was deemed unplayable.
Tony McNamee, Packie Mailey, Liam Flatley and Michael Rafter scored the goals.
“There were positives and negatives,” Horgan told Donegal Sport Hub. “It was 1-1 at half-time and Athlone changed their entire team, all 11 players.
“But it was a good run out for us and it’s not too often we score four goals. At the minute, though, we need games on grass. Apart from the Inishowen League game, we’ve been on astroturf all the time.”
Next Saturday at 2pm, Harps face UCD in their penultimate pre-season friendly at Belfield with a fixture against Drogheda United – venue to be confirmed – on Saturday, February 27.
Harps then open their SSE Airtricity League Premier Division campaign against Derry City at Finn Park on Friday, March 4.
Against Athlone, Harps took the lead through McNamee, who scored from the edge of the penalty area. Emeka Onwubiko levelled the game to make it 1-1.
Richard Brush took over from Ciaran Gallagher in goal for the second half and Michael Funston and Flatley were also introduced.
Adam Hanlon then set up Packie Mailey to head Harps in front on 65 minutes before another assist from Hanlon saw Flatley get on the scoresheet on 78 minutes.
Michael O’Sullivan pulled one back for the Division One side but it was Rafter who had the last word.
