LAST WEEKEND SAW Cranford ACÂ athletes travel to Magherafelt for the Ulster Indoor Track and Field Championships.
This was the first indoors for some athletes and with the event being ran over two days a few had to make the journey to Magherafelt on both days.
We got off to a great start in the boys under-12 long jump with Max Roarty winning a bronze medal with a fine jump of 3.56 metres followed closely by Cian McMenamim with a jump of 3.14 metres. Max and Cian both ran very well in the 600m coming in a respectable sixth and ninth place overall.
Our girls under-12 were up next with Orla Neely throwing well in the shot put finishing 11th overall. In the under-12 600m race we had strong performances from Teresa Mullen, Ciara Donnelly and Leah McDaid in their first indoor competition.
Caitlin O’Hara and Sophie Curran both ran very in the under-12 girls 600m race with both girls improving with each race. In the under-13 boys 600m there was more success for Cranford with Oisin Kelly leading from the gun and with what looked like an effortless performance finished in one minute 44 seconds, which was eight seconds ahead of the field, claiming his first gold of the day.
Liam Donnelly and Oran McMenamim also ran very well with Liam finishing in an impressive sixth place.
Oisin won his second gold medal with a brilliant jump of 4.43 metres in the under-13 long jump with Liam Donnelly also jumping very well with a great jump of 4.25 metres winning him a bronze medal.
Allan Neely was up next in the under-14Â boys 800m where he had a good strong run finishing very well.
In the under-15Â girls 800m Molly Trearty had a great race and after a strong finish came home in a superb fifth place overall.
On Sunday it was all about the shot putt with Allan Neely throwing well in the under-14Â event finishing in eighth place.
Johnny Trearty and Oran McMenamim showed some great technique in the under-13Â boys shot putt finishing in seventh and eighth place.
Aoife Giles closed what was a great weekend for Cranford with a massive throw and new personal best of 10.08 metres in the under-13 girls shot putt which won her a well deserved gold medal.
A massive well done to all the athletes for what was a great weekend for Cranford coming home with three gold and two bronze medals.
Thanks as always to the coaches Eamon Giles, Joe Boyce, Ernie McElhinney, Rose Gavaghan and Bridie Trearty for all their hard work and support and to all the parents that travelled with the children.
Good luck to Max, Oisin, Liam and Aoife who now travel to Athlone in March for the National Indoor Championships.
