LETTERKENNY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY have qualified for the final of the Colleges’ and Universities Football League Division One following the most dramatic of wins.
IT Carlow B 4-5 Letterkenny Institute of Technology (after extra-time)
Shane Byrne’s team were away to IT Carlow B and led four times – 1-0, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 – over the course of the 90 minutes and extra-time that followed, with their hosts levelling on three separate occasions.
However, the issue was finally put to bed when Anthony Appiah of Bonagee United scored the winning goal in extra-time.
It was 3-3 after 90 minutes, with Dean Larkin scoring, Paul McVeigh on the mark and Peter Doherty also a goalscorer before McVeigh made it 4-3 in extra-time. Then, another IT Carlow equalisier before Appiah sealed the win.
The Bonagee United striker’s goal came in the first period of extra-time, to make it 5-4 and LyIT held out in the second period.
Only when Carlow went 2-1 up did LyIT trail but McVeigh and Doherty had turned that into a 3-2 lead.
LyIT will now play either Dundalk IT or NUI Maynooth B in the final in two weeks’ time. Next week, Byrne’s side welcome Dublin IT in the quarter-final of the Umbro Cup.
