KELLY MCGRORY WON 400m gold the Athletics Ireland GloHealth Junior and U-23 Championships in Athlone yesterday.
Injury blighted her 2015 so the Tir Chonaill AC member (pictured above by Kieran Carlin) would’ve been delighted with her performances yesterday, when she clocked 57.57 seconds in the U-23 final, which was enough to pip Leah Bergin from Clonliffe Harriers by 0.03 seconds.
Lifford-Strabane AC’s Shannon Craig was an impressive second in the junior women’s high jump having reached 1.55 metres. Deana Kealy from St Abban’s AC won gold in 1.60 metres and in third, Saoirse Reihill from Tallaght AC with 1.50 metres.
Janine Boyle from Finn Valley AC also secured herself a podium place. In her case, it was for silver in the junior long jump with her best for the day being 5.51 metres – 19 centimetres off Cushinstown AC’s Elizabeth Morland.
Boyle’s clubmate Ian Brennan came third in the junior men’s triple jump. Brennan’s best was 13.52 metres. Jordan Hoang of Tullamore Harriers AC was the gold medal winner with 14.44 metres and Cushinstown AC’s Shane Joyce guaranteed silver with 14.02 metres.
Fodhla NicPhaidin of Rosses AC jumped 10.60 metres in the junior triple jump, which was enough for bronze behind Aoibheann O’Brien from Tralee Harriers (10.92 metres) and Waterford AC’s Grace Furlong (10.79 metres).
Simon Archer, who is at the LyIT and trains with Finn Valley, also got two silvers in the high jump and the 200m in the Under-2’s3. Archer runs with Templemore AC, Co Tipperary.
