LETTERKENNY ROVERS ADVANCED to the last 16 of the SFAI Under-13 National Cup after a thoroughly deserved 2-0 win on the Celtic Park Astro on Saturday afternoon.
Castlebar Celtic 0-2 Letterkenny Rovers
Rovers dominated against Castlebar Celtic the game for long periods and came close early in the game through a trademark Joel Gorman long range effort while David Boyle also hit the post.
Castlebar would have been relieved to have gotten in at the break level but it wasnt to be as it was Rovers who made the all important breakthrough just before half time.
A David Boyle corner – just like in last weeks league game against Keadue – appeared to go straight in but Nathan Plumb was there to make sure much to the delight of the large travelling support.
Michael Boyle’s men were good value for their lead but were indebted to goalkeeper Killian Gribben who pulled off a super save early in the second half as the Mayo side searched hard for a leveller.
Castlebar applied some serious pressure at times but were repelled by the Rovers backline for whom Sean McVeigh was very impressive.
The two sides were well matched but it was Rovers who got the all important second goal when Adam Yissau lobbed the home goalkeeper with nine minutes remaining.
Roves are on the road again when they head to Dublin to face either Swords or St Josephs Boys in the last 16.
