FRANK MCGLYNN IS long enough in the tooth now not to get overly stressed following first round exits in the Dr McKenna Cup.
McGlynn (pictured above by Geraldine Diver with Donegal County Board chairman Sean Dunnion), who debuted for Donegal as a 19-year-old in 2006 and was the 2015 Player of the Year, believes Rory Gallagher, the Donegal manager, made use of the 2016 competition, which concluded with a 0-12 to 0-8 loss to Fermanagh at Brewster Park in Enniskillen last night.
Donegal haven’t made the semi-finals since 2010 but in the meantime in the championship have made at least an Ulster final and All-Ireland quarter-final since 2011. Gallagher, this year, has brought a host of youngsters to the fray – 10 debutants – with none of last year’s panel having retired and Rory Kavanagh back in contention after coming out of retirement.
“Results-wise you’d be disappointed but a lot of new players were brought in and they have two or three games under their belt,” McGlynn said. “Those younger lads have bedded in very well and there’s a good group of them coming. There’s a good mix between young and old.
“We’ve not lost too many players from the experienced players and the young lads coming through have their own experience. Definitely this year it’s a fresh start and the young lads from brought freshness to it.
“Rory has made it clear whoever puts their best foot forward on the training field will get the game-time.”
