THE DONEGAL LEAGUE has confirmed the action taken against Glenea United and Castlefin Celtic following the abandonment of their fixture last month.
Referee Joe McHugh called the teams off during the Brian McCormick Sports Premier Division fixture with 14 minutes remaining on December 13.
McHugh had just issued Castlefin’s Mark Lafferty and Glenea’s Darren McGeever with red cards before an alleged incident took place involving players and officials from both clubs.
Castlefin were 3-1 up at the time and at last Thursday night’s meeting on the matter, the Donegal League Disciplinary Committee confirmed the result will stand, which means Castlefin are now top of the league.
Both clubs, who were informed of the decision this week by registered post, were also fined and warned about their future behavior. Lafferty and McGeever were handed two-match bans following the referee’s report.
Glenea and Castlefin both have the option to appeal their punishment to the Ulster FA.
Tags:“We did what we felt what was the fairest thing,” acting Donegal League Disciplinary Secretary Jimmy Haughey told Donegal Sport Hub. “It’s unfortunate it happened and we certainly don’t want a recurrence of this but there’s a lot of good people involved in both clubs who do a lot for football and a lot for the league and hopefully we can all learn from it and move on.”
