MAGGIE FARRELLY made history tonight as she refereed the Bank of Ireland Dr McKenna Cup game between Fermanagh and St Mary’s College at Garvaghey.
Farrelly, from the Laragh club in Cavan, has been studying in Letterkenny and playing for Glenfin, with whom she won the Donegal Club Championship in 2011.
Tonight, Farrelly became the first female to referee a senior inter county Gaelic football match.
The game was originally pencilled in for Sunday, but a waterlogged pitch in Enniskillen led to its postponement and tonights’s rescheduled contest was moved to Garvaghey, the Tyrone Centre of Excellence.
A second-half goal by Ciaran Flaherty gave Fermanagh a 1-13 to 0-14 win on a night of history as Farrelly took charge.
In 2014, she was the first female to officiate at a senior men’s game when she was the sideline official for the Allianz League clash of Dublin and Kerry at Croke Park.
