THE DONEGAL SCHOOLBOYS LEAGUE UNDER-13’s had a good workout and result against Derry’s Oxford at the Curragh.
Donegal SL 4-2 Oxford
The game, which consisted of three periods of 25 minutes was played in cold and sometimes wet conditions in Killygordan.
Oxford took the lead after 10 minutes, a ball into the Donegal box was not cleared at the centre of the defence and it was finished well by the left winger with a right footed shot.
Oxford finished 1-0 up after the first 25 minutes and rightly deserved their lead with the better performance.
Donegal came out the stronger after the break when they introduced a few new faces. Blake McGarvey hit the net after a brilliant run down the right flank by Adam Yisau who whipped in a great ball and it was caught on the volley by the busy McGarvey.
Yisau had a chance himself but this was saved smartly by the Oxford keeper. Donegal were now starting to turn the screw and this dominance seen them go ahead when a through ball to McGarvey and was put away with a cool finish for his second.
Joshua Bradley scored a good individual goal as his power and pace seen him glide past three Oxford defenders to finish well with a right footed shot. Daniel Gildea set up Sean McGinley at the back post to bang it home and this seen Donegal finish this second period well on top with a 4-1 score line.
Again Donegal had rung the changes after the break. Oxford came out battling and after three minutes had a free on the left hand side; Donegal would have been disappointed not to clear the ball and was finished well at the back post by the on running forward.
Bradley had another good one on one chance with the Oxford keeper but shot high and wide. Patrick McGarvey made a good save in the Donegal nets near the end of the game. The game finished 4-2 to Donegal and was an entertaining affair; a lot of credit has to go to Oxford a very good Derry side. This was a good workout for the Donegal squad.
