A BRAND NEW club with its roots deep in the local fabric of the town is about to launch in Letterkenny this weekend.
It has been a well-kept secret for the locals since the early 90s on the club circuit. Winding back the clock people will remember the old Central Club with its round bar in the middle of the floor and all its nooks and crannies.
DJ Marty Curran blasting out the party anthems every Tuesday night for the local workers, a big hit for Unfi people at the time. People will remember the late Frank McCarron playing out the party hits on a Saturday night. Local DJs PK and Marty Clampet brought their Monday club from the old Downtown to the Central Club back at the tail end of the 90s. Rock, punk and ska being the order of the day.
We jump forward to 2001 and local resident DJ, Kevin McDaid takes up the reins on the Monday nights, the beginnings of Monday Madness. We caught up with Kevin to get a few words.
‘A great night for weekend workers, revellers still on the go from Sunday night always seem to make an appearance,” he said.
“Monday night is something I still look forward to, I wonder where the last 15 years have disappeared to, they have always been a great bit of craic, and many special nights were held upstairs, loads of familiar faces. Bar staff from Blakes, McGinleys, Voodoo and the Glencar Inn always make it a great night. We always seem to get people from all sporting corners, GAA teams, dart teams, local soccer and rugby teams out celebrating whatever triumph they had accomplished over the weekend.
“It has always had an up for it crowd. We moved downstairs a while back but I am very excited about moving back upstairs to the re-fitted club, No.58. It is really well finished with its new lights, sound and décor, I am looking forward to rocking it out upstairs again. Doors open at 12 and it’s still free entry on a Monday night so join us if you can.”
This weekend sees the launch of No. 58 with a fully loaded line-up. Friday night this week is the launch of Dj Macs Club Classic night. Tunes from the 90s and 00s will have you busting a move to grooves this weekend. Get your shouts in to the DJ box as he stimulates a few memories. Doors open at 11:00pm.
