WHAT WERE YOU doing in September 1990?
Charles Haughey was Taoiseach. Pete Sampras won his first US Open Tennis title. Goodfellas the Robert De Niro movie was released. Ireland was just recovering from the hangover and the euphoria surrounding the Irish soccer team who were beaten by hosts Italy in the World Cup Quarter final.
Donegal GAA team had just won the Ulster Senior Football Championship for the first time in seven years and CLG Baile na nGalloglach won their first ever Championship defeating Convoy in the Junior Championship final on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-6.
The first team from the Club to win a County Championship will be honoured at the Club’s annual presentation night which will take place in the Mulroy Woods Hotel on Sunday 27th December along with the Senior team who won the All County League Division 3 and the Minor team who won a County Minor B Championship.
September 9, 1990, was the red letter day for Na Galloglaigh Gaels as they came with a late, late surge to overcome Convoy in the final at MacCumhaill Park. CLG BnaG, managed by Garrett Horkan and Seamus Durkan Snr, trailed Convoy from early on and but for an excellent goal scored on the stroke of half time by veteran Fergus Friel they may well have had too high of a mountain to climb in the seond half.
Indeed, Na Galloglaigh did not take the lead until seven minutes from time when points from brothers John Gerard and Philip “Ogie” Mc Gettigan set them on their way to victory. Great scenes of celebration ensued when referee Liam Brown blew for full time and Pat Barrett had the honour of being the first man to captain the Club to Championship victory.
We look forward to the Presentation Night on the 27th when the 1990 heroes can meet and recount stories on the famous campaign and perhaps give some tips to the younger history makers.
Tickets for the Presentation Dinner Dance are available from any Committe member price €25.
St Stephens Day Exiles Match
After the great craic that was had last year the Club is holding another Exiles match this St Stephens day. Last year saw over 50 players togging out and it was great to see old friends that are currently scattered all thoughout the country and across the globe get together for a great days entertainment and catch up with each other.
The exiles took the trophy last year and will no doubt be looking to show they still have it! There will also be a veterans match featuring the Junior Championship winning side of 1990. Should be a great days fun, throw in at 1pm. Hope to see you there.
