CHLOE MAGEE was on court three times yesterday at the Carlton Irish Open in Baldoyle today and came away with three victories.
The 27-year-old third seed (pictured above), who has represented Ireland at badminton in the last two Olympic Games, opened her women’s singles with a first round win over Chloe Birch from England, 21-13 21-17 before pairing up with her brother Sam for the mixed doubles.
The Raphoe siblings, who are seeded one, were on the brink of first round elimination having faced a match-point in the second set. However, a brilliant recovery saw them post a 16-21, 23-21, 21-16 win over Matthew Nottingham and Emily Westwood from England.
This morning they are due to face Dutch duo Robin Tabeling and Samantha Barning at 10am in the quarter-finals.
Then, Chloe was back in action in the second round of the women’s singles and beat Gayle Mahulette from the Netherlands 21-12, 21-14, and later in this morning’s session, has a last eight encounter against Natalia Koch Rohde from Denmark.
Also in the first round of the mixed doubles yesterday, Chloe and Sam’s brother Joshua teamed up with niece Rachael Darragh, who is also from Raphoe, to topple English pair Callum Hemming and England Evie Burbidge 21-13, 21-17.
They’re also in action this morning at 10am, with a clash against second-seeded Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba from Poland.
Yesterday evening in the men’s doubles, Martin Campbell and Patrick Machugh from Scotland defeated Sam and Joshua, with the scoreboard reading 21-15, 24-22 at the conclusion.
Joshua bowed out in the first qualifying round of the men’s qualifiers following his 21-12, 21-17 reversal at the hands of Scotland’s Ben Torrance.
In the women’s qualifiers, Rachael had a fine 21-12, 21-11 win over Evie Burbidge from England. The 17-year-old was then defeated after an incredibly spirited showing against second seed Linda Zetchiri from Bulgaria 21-17, 21-14.
Rachael is still involved in the women’s doubles, as her and partner Sara Boyle enjoyed a walkover victory again Sophie Brown and Kate Robertshaw – the fourth seeds – from England.
Julie Finne-Ipsen and Rikke S Hansen from Denmark are their opponents today.
