LETTERKENNY RFC’S UNDER-15 GIRLS lost out against Virginia in Baltic conditions on Sunday.
Virginia 38-7 Letterkenny
Letterkenny started brightly and put pressure on the home team’s line with Lucy O’Connell to the fore. Following a couple of missed tackles the bigger home team ran in a couple of breakaway tries.
‘Kenny tried hard and put in a lot of tackles but the pressure told and as the game went on more tries were conceded.
Eventually Lucy O’Connell burst through a number of tackles to touch down in the corner after great work by Sara Bundeschu.
The difficult conversion was nailed by Eimar Alcorn. At this stage Jade Duffy was beginning to make her presence felt and had a number of excellent runs. Sara McBrearty had a number of darting runs, and quite a few tackles, showing some of her older colleagues how it was done.
With 10 minutes to go Amy McClintock broke a tackle and passed to Aoife O’Riordan, who stepped inside the out-half and burst between the two centres. She beat the full-back for pace, galloped 50 yards, only to slip on a hole in the pitch while dotting the ball down and losing it forward for what would have been a brilliant try.
This was a excellent performance from a team who had three of their most senior players off injured, thanks to them for coming the long journey to Viginia to support their teammates.
In two weeks time – December 13 – Letterkenny play Enniskillen at home.
