THE MAGEES’ INTEREST in the Yonex Welsh International 2015 ended yesterday.
Chloe and Sam Magee, who were second seeds, reached the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles, only to go down 21-19, 22-20 in a close match against fifth seeds Sawan Serasinghe and Setyana Mapasa from Australia.
Beforehand, the Raphoe siblings had defeated Ryan Jing Quek and Meera Sivakumaran from England 21-17, 21-10 after overcoming Chia Hao Lee and Chia Hsin Lee from Chinese Taipei 21-15, 21-15.
In the same competition, Chloe and Sam’s bother Joshua teamed up with niece Rachael Darragh, who is also from Raphoe.
They enjoyed a 21-18, 21-18 victory over Joshua Young and Grace Taylor from England in Round 1 before going down 21-11, 21-9 to sixth seeded English pair Gregory Mairs and Jenny Moore.
In the women’s singles, sixth seed Chloe began by getting the better of Martina Repiska from Slovakia 21-17, 21-16 and followed that up with a Round 2 success over Russia’s Natalia Perminova on a 21-19, 21-11 scoreline.
However, the busy schedule eventually caught up on the two-time Olympian and she lost the quarter-final 22-20, 21-16 against Petya Nedelcheva from Bulgaria, who was seeded four.
Joshua won through the qualifiers thanks to wins over three English opponents – Kit Clement-Dawson (18-21, 21-11, 21-11), Joel Douse (16-21, 22-20, 21-18) and Mark Dolman (22-20, 21-16) – but lost out in Round 1 proper against Poland’s Swierczynki Mateusz, 24-22, 21-13.
In the men’s doubles, Sam and Joshua started with a win over Robert Golding and Victor Liew from England, 22-24, 21-15, 24-22.
They then scored a highly impressive victory over the fifth seeds, Matthew Chau and Sawan Serasinghe from Australia, 21-16, 21-13 before bowing out in the last eight against English pair and third seeds Andrew Ellis and Peter Mills 21-16, 21-18.
